Initial Ideas
We have discussed through a plan for our artist and music video that links with our chosen genre very well.
This post will present all of my group's initial ideas and plans for the final piece. We have put together this presentation to clearly outline our ideas. |

Overall, our presentation outlines the basics of our ideas clearly as it jumps straight to the point. However, me and my partner did miss out on a few points about our music video and artist, such as discussing further about the image of the artist that we will portray within the video and the way in which we are planning to promote them.
From the feedback and questions we received at the end of our pitch, it was clear that there were still some confusion about certain aspects of the narrative which could have been presented more clearly by me and my partner. Our ideas for the music video continue to develop and expand, therefore certain changes may be made since this presentation. |
Location Scouting:
CANARY WHARF
The location that we thought would match the general dystopian theme of our narrative, wherein the character is at first portrayed as simply another conformist in a controlled and manipulated society, living by the rules and following the narrow path that has been constructed for them. We thought this location would be great for our music video as it is quite a prestigious area and the modern architecture hints to a futuristic society. It suggests to a world where complete equality has been achieved yet any trace of individuality has been erased.
EMPTY BEDROOM
The room that we will be using in the narrative section of the video will be completely emptied out by the time of filming. This room is an extremely small space which we thought was best for the narrative as it could represent how trapped the character feels, even in a space as comfortable and intimate as their own bedroom. The emptiness of the room also demonstrates the way that the character is not allowed to personalise the room due to the controlling society.
PERFORMANCE: ASSEMBLY HALL
The performance shots will take place in the Schools Assembly hall which had a projector that can project clips onto the wall. I also thought that the band photoshoot for the Digipak could take place here. We chose to separate the narrative and the performance as this reflects on the conventions of indie music videos and artists as performance clips are significantly used within the genre.
BRITANNIA LEISURE CENTRE
I got permission to film a scene underwater at the leisure centre when it was not in use and they allowed us to be in there for 10 minutes, and we have to film in the corner. however I think having an underwater shot would be really cool to link with the ideas of suffocation in the lyrics.
Contacting the BandThe task of our advanced porfolio to create a music video with a pre-existing track also requires us to get the consent of the artist in order to use the track. This is due to the copyright laws surrounding using other's work. After searching for ways to contact the Band Nothing But Thieves, the only way that I could ask to use their song in my music video was through Facebook and Twitter. I decided to contact them through Facebook as they have 48K followers on twitter which would have made it dificult to catch their attention.
I made sure to disclaim that the video will only be for the pupose of my media cousework rather than for profit, and will only be seen by a small group of people in my Sixth Form. |
The lyrics in our chosen song, Itch by Nothing but Thieves surrounds ideas of numbness and a sort of detachment from his emotions as he writes with a sense of longing to feel "something" even if he doesn't know what he wants to feel. He even seems to view pain as something beautiful as he is so deprived of emotions, the feeling of pain is accepted by the writer. The song also surrounds ideas of individualism in society, how important it is to not be discouraged by having to follow society's expectations. It is a subtle criticism of society. The lyrics demonstrate feelings of rebellion. For example the lyrics "there's an itch under my skin," "I just want to feel something real." suggest that the artist wants to be themselves rather than feel controlled by society. This is further evidence of the controversial style of music that the band produces. The lack of emotion in the lyrics is also commonly seen in dystopian novels such as 1984 wherein the only emotion people are allowed to show are anger and hatred. We will present these lyrics through imagery that link with a controlled society, such as formal clothing to symbolise conformity and an empty bedroom to represent the speaker's lack of identity and emotion. |
Storyboard of Our Ideas
Through the first few locations of the narrative being in a more modern and prestigious area where our character could be working, my group wanted this to hint to a controlled society. The grey streets and buildings of Canary Wharf, London helps to create a feeling of lifelessness in society which we want to illustrate in our video. As the character notices the surveillance cameras she shuts her eyes and the shot changes as if to escape reality, which is when she begins to do the things that she felt she couldn't. We also wanted to include skyline shots of the buildings for an effect of showing how insignificant we seem. These elements will help us achieve a dystopian theme for the music video.
Update: My partner no longer attends school, therefore I will be working on this project on my own from this point.

Band Logo Ideas
I attempted to come up with something that could easily link with our band name 'Bad Moon Rising' and also suggest to the message of the music video. I think the first and third ideas fit the best as they are quite simple and therefore easier for audiences to remember. Furthermore, they could link with a variety of different narratives, making them quite good logo's.
